Automotive Technician Apprentice

High school diploma or GED; experience in automotive servicing or repair or training/education in automotive work preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of automotive repair and maintenance. Knowledge of the basic mechanical operation of gasoline and diesel powered equipment and of the equipment and supplies used to service them; ability to understand and follow written and oral directions; interpret and apply information from technical manuals, service manuals, schematic diagrams, diagnostic aids, flow charts and graphs; to use a computerized maintenance management system; skills in repairing, replacing and balancing tires; lubricating and otherwise maintaining automotive equipment; ability to properly care for and use tools, equipment and facilities; ability to perform physically demanding work including, but not limited to, walking up and down stairs, standing for prolonged periods, squatting, stooping, bending, twisting, stretching, crawling, reaching overhead and working in awkward positions without choice or variety.

Conditions may include occasional work in adverse weather conditions and/or extreme temperatures. Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, records must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months.

Out of state records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification required.

Under the supervision of the Automotive Maintenance Supervisor and/or a journey-level technician, performs work of routine difficulty in assisting in the maintenance and repair of a variety of automotive vehicles. Performs a variety of non-mechanical services on vehicles such as changing oil and oil filters; draining, flushing and refilling transmissions and differentials; replacing work items such as windshield wiper blades, fan belts, light bulbs, and similar parts; and changing, repairing, and balancing and rotating tires. Assists in diagnosing, repairing, and servicing various passenger vehicles and light trucks.

Assists in performing computerized drivability diagnostics, repairs, tests, and adjustments to manufacturer's specifications. Assists in diagnosing and repairing engines and related components, automatic transmission and transaxle, drive trains and axles, suspension and steering systems, brakes, electrical/electronic systems, heating and air conditioning systems, and engine performance. Participates in preparing and maintaining a variety of records related to repair work, work orders, status, and labor charges.

Performs other work as required. Considered Designated/Essential personnel during adverse weather or emergency events.
