State Highway Administration Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice District 7 – Carroll County Grade 07 (4812) SP# 26-87-06 Description Overview Recruitment: The State Highway Administration's District 7 – Carroll County is currently recruiting for a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice (HEMT) position. This is an Interview and Hire position open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below. Nature of Work The Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice is the entry level of repair and maintenance work on motor vehicles, diesel powered equipment and/or construction/maintenance equipment. Employees in this classification do not supervise.

They receive close supervision from a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor or other designated supervisor. Employees are considered essential and are subject to call 24 hours a day as may be required to maintain continuous operation. They may be required to work rotating shifts including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays and may be called during off-hours in hazardous weather or highway conditions.

Employees are required to work outdoors in all types of weather and may be exposed to extreme heat, fumes, exhaust and hazardous materials. Some assignments may require moving objects weighing over 50 pounds. MDOT offers a generous and competitive benefits package.

• Experience: None. • Notes: Applicants may substitute documented relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education. U.S.

Armed Forces military service experience can substitute on a year‑for‑year basis. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can substitute for two years of the required education (the two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing are considered integral to this substitution and cannot be used separately). Certification as a Master Technician by ASE can substitute for the required education.

Licenses & Certifications Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in Maryland. All applicants must list license number and expiration date on the application. Selected candidate will need to obtain a Class B CDL license within six months of appointment.

Employees may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver’s License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on the type of equipment operated. Employees will be required to successfully complete agency certification programs to be eligible for permanent status in this classification. Special Requirements • Employees must be available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required to maintain continuous operation.

• Employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and must maintain a reliable communication link for emergency call-back requirements. • Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead-based paint or chromium may be required to undergo periodic medical testing and wear a respirator. • Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11.
